She also gives depositions and provides training to nurses. Ms. Palmer became involved in her profession because she originally wanted to be a veterinarian. Her relatives owned farms and she spent a lot of time working with injured and newborn farm animals. However, her mother influenced her to try a career in occupational therapy, and she has been successful since. She worked at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan for 17 years in the acute care, rehabilitation, work hardening and outpatient departments. She introduced the first cancer patient/family education/support program to Michigan in 1980, which raised patient awareness. It was a program belonging to the American Cancer Society called the I Can Cope program, and oversaw the operations of the program for 10 years. She has led her private practice for over 10 years. She attributes her success to being a critical thinker and a problem solver contributing to the organization because of a deep passion for being an occupational therapist. She enjoys helping individuals improve their functional daily life skill and wants to significantly contribute because of the life experiences she has had, such as overcoming lymphoma at age 22.
